How can I Make My Pets Comfortable During a Move?

It’s no secret that moving is a stressful time for everyone involved. From making the decision to move to actually moving, and all the steps in between, there is so much that needs to be done. When you’re so focused on the move itself, you can easily forget about other matters that may be even more important. Matters like your furry little friends. People get so caught up in their clothes, and furniture, and other belongings that they may overlook their pets. Follow these steps to ensure your pet has a safe and comfortable move too!

  1. Inform your vet of your move. This way your vet can provide you with any necessary medication or information regarding the health of your pet before you go. It is also a good idea to research local vets in the area you are moving and finding a good candidate to take your pets.
  2. Make sure your collar wearing pets have updated information on their tags just in case. Get tags with your new address that you can put on your pets when right when you get to your new home.
  3. Pets have an amazing ability to sense the feelings of their owners, and when their owners are stressed out, and chaotically running around planning a move, their pets start to get a little stressed too. While you’re going crazy packing everything up, let your pet play outside, or give them a toy to play with in another room. Isolating them from the stressful environment can make them feel more comfortable and relaxed.
  4. Once it’s finally time to pack up and go, whatever mode of transportation you’re using, make sure your animals are comfortable, especially if it’s a long ride. Give your dogs a window seat, and keep smaller animals in a crate with toys and water.
  5. When you have finally arrived at your new home, the chaos will begin again. Your animals will be overcome with curiosity. Let them roam around the yard and house to get more acquainted with the area. Bring a chain to tie them up outside while you’re bringing stuff inside. They’ll watch contently, but they’ll be out of the way. You can unload fast without worrying about them, and then when you’re all done you can settle in together as a family.

Let us know if you have pets and we’ll do whatever we can to make them feel as comfortable as possible!
