Things getting lost or misplaced during a move seems to be a tale as old as time. We here at Expert Moving take pride in our ability to handle peoples belongings with care and respect. We also understand the risks of personal belongings during a move, especially smaller, more valuable items like jewelry. Jewelry holds a special place in peoples hearts, whether its a family heirloom or an engagement ring; and unfortunately jewelry is some of the most misplaced items during a move. If it is a local move you can think about using a safe deposit box at a local bank. Follow these tips to ensure that all your jewelry gets to your new home safe and secure.
Keep Jewelry by Your Side
First things first when it comes to keeping your jewelry safe during a move, and that is to keep it with you during the entire process. No, this doesn’t mean putting on every last piece of jewelry you own. Pack your jewelry safely and do not put it in a moving box to be taken in the moving truck, or don’t put it in storage with the rest of your things. Keep it with you, in whichever mode of transportation you’re taking during the move, just put it in the back seat or in the trunk. That way you’ll at least know where it is at all times and can hold yourself accountable.
Packing Techniques
It’s no secret that jewelry can be extremely fragile, and a move can be dangerous for jewelry because it is very easy for things to get knocked around. Packing up jewelry properly can ensure it will withstand the stresses a move can push on it and that it will make it to your new home intact.
Jewelry Box
This may seem like an obvious one but some people may think that a jewelry box does not offer enough protection. Jewelry boxes are actually quite effective at safely transporting jewelry. They are usually made of a hardwood and are quite sturdy and they contain many drawers and sections within to organize and separate jewelry types. These drawers and compartment can be locked or taped shut so the jewelry doesn’t spill out. The inside of the jewelry box is most likely lined with soft padding material. Once the drawers are locked or sealed, wrapping the jewelry box in a protective layer is essential to avoid scratching and other damages to its exterior.
Straws
Straws can be an effective method for packing long thin jewelry like necklaces and bracelets. Slipping the piece of jewelry through the straw and clasping it will prevent the necklace from getting tangled during the bumpy ride. Once the chain is neatly through the straw make sure to wrap it in protective packing paper to avoid any damage.
Toilet Paper Rolls
Empty toilet paper rolls can be used essentially the same way as the straws. For the thicker jewelry that can’t fit through the straw. These are usually a perfect fit for thicker bracelets.
Egg Cartons
Empty egg cartons actually offer a perfect storage container for rings and earrings. Wrapping each piece and placing them in separate cups. This keeps the jewelry neatly organized and within a safe transport. After the cups are filled just be sure to wrap the egg carton with padding and ensure it is sealed securely.
These helpful tips can offer some ideas of how to protect your valuable jewelry over the course of a move, and hopefully, help get your jewelry to your new home with ease. Whichever method you decide to use just be sure to always keep your jewelry with you during the move, and make sure to wrap each piece individually to avoid any kind of damage.
